Business Insider graphics

As Senior Design Editor at Business Insider, I managed a team of designers that published digital content seen by over 100M unique viewers a month. I worked alongside executive stakeholders to set the strategic vision for news imagery, creative directed multimedia features, implemented new workflows to enhance visual content, and introduced style guides and training to elevate storytelling across all visual media and platforms.

Business Insider is the world’s largest digital business news site, and covers the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. BI reaches curious, goal-oriented people, and inspires them to act.

Saving Our World feature

Saving our World is a powerful visual feature about the climate crisis. I directed the creative vision for this editorial series and helped secure a sponsorship partner.

The eight stories in this package took nearly a year to report and feature a range of compelling multimedia content. My team had the freedom to experiment with a variety of storytelling formats, and Saving Our World resonated with readers because of its effective blend of interactive design, content strategy, and product development.

Graphics style guide

The Business Insider Graphics Style Guide contained all brand guidance and templates, in addition to defining optimal use-cases and best practices for illustrations, data visualizations, and infographics.

The straightforward styles and associated templates and libraries helped ensure the consistency of our editorial voice and allowed my small team to publish dozens of graphics every day.

BI’s readers love infographics, maps, and charts. This is a small sampling of the thousands of data visualizations we published between 2013 and 2017.

Videos

The graphics and video teams collaborated often on fun, informative, and shareable videos. Here is a favorite that uses a clever hook to compare the atmospheric conditions across planets in our solar system.

Simplifying complexity and turning basic data into compelling stories was our bread and butter.

Illustrations

I created a library of over 200 portrait illustrations of the most frequently reported and relevant people in the news. These were BI’s contemporary, digital-first take on the Wall Street Journal’s classic hedcut illustrations.

These illustrations most often accompanied feature interviews and gave BI a unique and branded visual to stand out from the crowd.

Social graphics

Social media became an increasingly important platform for telling visual stories and engaging with our audience.

Though my team created content for BI’s YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram channels with a combined audience of over 100M followers, it was fun to also have an account of our own. I created the Graphics Insider account and grew it to 150k followers in less than two years.
