Hopper illustration

I was contracted by Hopper to create over 100 brand, marketing, and UI illustrations that would position Hopper as the go-to source for exploring the world. Many of the visuals were created in close collaboration with Hopper’s Art Director, Thomas Fitzpatrick.

Hopper aspires to be the world’s best — and most fun — place to book travel. As the #1 most downloaded travel app in North America, Hopper has helped over 75 million travelers save time and money. Illustrations are core to the Hopper user experience. They add levity and delight to the booking process, and introduce fun and unexpected opportunities for brand storytelling.

Destination screens

Hopper’s playful visuals inject nearly every screen of the app with personality and fun. A welcome alternative the same tired stock photos we’ve all seen of iconic destinations, they provide a glimpse of the world through Hopper’s unique lens.

I worked closely with Hopper’s in-house team to identify scenes that would resonate with their customers, then began all illustrations by iterating on loose sketches before executing the final vector assets in Illustrator.

Marketing illustrations

A diverse community of Hopper’s mascot bunnies populate many of the illustrations. These active, supportive, and affectionate bunnies are an expression of Hopper’s core values and help to differentiate Hopper from their competitors.

Though most of the illustrations I created were primarily for use in the app UI, some were repurposed as eye-catching content for marketing materials, promotions, and social media.

Social engagement

The most vibrant and popular illustrations were also used as engaging and interactive social content.

For Easter, many destination illustrations became the setting for a digital Easter egg hunt a la ‘Where’s Waldo.’ The unconventionally proportioned full-screen illustrations also made great phone backgrounds for Hopper’s most devoted fans (or users who just loved a certain city or landmark).

Feed and search screens

Hopper is a beloved app for its accurate price forecasting and ease-of-use. With over 1 million ratings, it’s earned 4.8 out of 5 stars in the App Store.

One positive reviewer described the UI/UX as “kind,” which is a testament to the empathy and storytelling that’s considered on every screen.
